Frequently Asked Questions?
What are the qualifications for Kairos volunteers?
Volunteers must be adult Christians. We accept volunteers from all
denominations. It is a plus if you have experienced a Crusillo or an Emmaus
Walk. Both lay and clergy volunteers are appreciated. We need men and women.
What is the commitment if I decide to volunteer?
A volunteer agrees to attend five or six training meetings which take place
on Saturday mornings normally at First United Methodist Church in Baton
Rouge.
A volunteer will attend the Kairos retreat on the first weekend following
the training meetings. The weekend begins on Thursday about noon and ends on
Saturday evening.
During the year following the retreat a volunteer agrees to visit Angola on
one Saturday for a reunion.
Volunteers helps raise the funds necessary for the weekend.
Volunteers agree to help produce cookies for the weekend and write brief
letters to each of the participants. We also enroll prayer warriors to
pray during each retreat weekend.
For more
information about the Kairos weekend, check out the guidebook.
Where will we sleep during the weekend?
We get rooms at a motel in St. Francisville, but we're not there
much.
Is it dangerous to go into Angola?
Angola is a maximum security prison. For many years it had a reputation as
the "bloodiest prison in America." Much has changed since the Kairos
ministry began at Angola. We are given detailed security briefings, security
personnel are always with us, and most of us feel safer there than in
our home towns.
